I'm Not Afraid

Author’s Note: this is an essay on the quotes that the author uses in the story “Thank you Ma’am.”

How would you feel if someone cam and tried to take you pocketbook? How would you react? In the story Thank you Ma’am the author Langston Hughes shows how the main character Mrs. Jones reacts when it happens to her and he also uses plenty of outstanding quotes to show how the characters feel and to set the scene. The quotes he uses show a lot that the large woman in this story that she is not afraid of the boy.

To begin with Mrs. Jones is walking and this young boy is trying to take her pocketbook and fails. Then she takes him and the first quote she says is "Now ain’t you ashamed of yourself?" this shows that Mrs. Jones is not afraid of this boy that is trying to take her pocketbook because she stands up to him and it also shows that they live in the streets because of the slang the author uses.

Another quote the author uses that is great is "Um-hum! And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’t you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?” She now thinks she needs to help the boy because he has nobody to take care of him and even though she almost was robed she is very nice that is what this quote says. Again the author uses great quotes.
